How One Person Can Change a Community:
It all started with an email….
A year ago this week I received this message :
“My friend Joanna is considering coming on your Photoserve trip to the Amazon. She is a dance teacher here in Chicago and in the coming year she is choreographing a dance themed around water. I can’t imagine greater inspiration than to experience the water crisis first hand. She is hesitant to apply because she’s not a visual artist in the proper sense of the term. Do you think she would be a good fit for this trip?”
“Yes. Yes. Yes. and again Yes. We believe that we all have a story to tell and we each use our different gifts and talents to do that. Please encourage Joanna to join us in the Amazon. We would Love to have her.”
And just like that, a girl that wondered if she would be a good fit for our journey to the Amazon, journeyed beyond her fears and hesitations to use her gifts and talents to encourage and inspire us all.
The Amazon welcomed Joanna and she welcomed it back as she danced upon the banks of the river and hand in hand with the children of Peru. In a week spent sharing lives and hard work, we brought clean water to a community that previously had none.
After we returned home, Joanna called me and said, “What if this didn’t have to end here? What if we could continue bringing clean water to communities in need from home? What if we brought the community of Chicago together to provide clean water for another community? We could literally save lives by bringing the artistic community of Chicago together to give back.”
And in that, “Where Beauty Rises” was born.
Where Beauty Rises is a response from the Chicago arts community to the global water crisis felt around the world. Partnering with dance company The Friday Collective + Photoserve, this is a collaborative night of performance dance, music, film and theatre in which your presence alone will provide clean water for someone living without. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to support a clean water project with Wine to Water.
We believe that Beauty Rises when we trade in our fears for possibilities and create out of the passions within. May beauty rise within each of us this night as we join our community to come alongside a community in need.
